Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
