A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
